Users will be prompted to upgrade to 10.9 Mavericks or newer. Older versions of Backup and Sync still run on 10.8 Mountain Lion, but are no longer supported.
As of this version, Backup and Sync will not start on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. May 22, 2018 - Dropped support for OS X Mountain Lion (.1898) Introduced a clearer error message for files that can’t be copied. Fixed an issue where some USB devices weren’t detected by Backup and Sync. Fixed an issue where users couldn’t disable context menu items on macOS.

As of this version, Backup and Sync won’t start on OS X 10.9 Mavericks. October 15, 2018 - Dropped support for OS X Mavericks (.4446) User interface updates to announce interoperability changes between Google Photos and Google Drive. Bug fixes and performance improvements. Items removed from Google Photos will not be removed from your computer, and vice versa. Updated the Preferences page to clarify that the “Removing items.” setting applies only between Backup and Sync and Google Drive. Backup and Sync now displays dialogs on macOS Catalina to request access to Documents, Desktop folders, and Apple Photos Libraries. Earlier versions of Backup and Sync do not work well and may display error messages if used on macOS Catalina. Backup and Sync version 3.46 and above supports macOS Catalina (10.15). Backup and Sync now displays shortcuts in Drive if you're a member of the shortcuts beta program. OctoSupport for shortcuts in Drive and macOS Catalina (3.46) The most visible changes are new dialogs to guide users in confusing privacy protection scenarios. The “Sync only these folders” list will load more quickly, especially for users with many folders to sync. Note: This is the last version of Backup and Sync that supports macOS X El Capitan v10.11. Note: Starting with version 3.50 and later, Backup and Sync no longer supports macOS X El Capitan v10.11. J– Dropped support for OS X El Capitan (3.50) Backup and Sync version 3.51 and above supports macOS Big Sur (10.16). Additional bug fixes and performance improvements. Fixed remaining M1 chip issues that prevented previous versions of Backup and Sync from running for some users. Backup and Sync version 3.54 and above supports macOS Big Sur (version 11) including Apple devices with the Apple M1 chip.
